Chef Ben | Journey Through Food

"Growing up in Kenya, it was my mother's inspiration that propelled me to become a chef. I used to watch her every day cooking in the kitchen, and it really fascinated me. She had so many cookbooks, I would read them all, desperate to learn the tricks of the trade.

"My family was a huge encouragement. They would take me out to try the local restaurant food, then love sampling my attempts at trying to recreate it at home - together with some new dishes of my own!

"My first job was an internship in Nairobi, Kenya, after finishing culinary school. I gained as much experience as I could in the top hotels and restaurants before moving to Switzerland to do my cheffing degree.

"I would often cook Italian dishes for friends on the side and they loved it. They said it was like being in a restaurant but you have your own space and can design the experience to your own personal taste. Their comments made me consider doing it more often, maybe even full time.

"This was the moment that I knew I wanted to become a private chef, to cook in other peoples’ houses and to express my creativity and be my own boss. I landed my first personal chef job in Switzerland and really loved it.

"But, I soon got fed up with the freezing cold climate and was debating where to move next. Growing up watching MasterChef Australia, I realised that Australia had some of the best chefs in the world, and I wanted to be part of that growing community.

"So, I made the leap and moved here in 2018, initially working in restaurants and hotels including the Hyatt Regency, before starting my own business as a private chef. Despite the pandemic, business is good, and like everyone in our industry, I have learnt to adapt to the ever-changing environment.

"I'm constantly creating new meal experiences that can be delivered to your door - like my Chef on the Go Breakfast Platter - and taking part in Insta Live cooking demos as well as hosting virtual cooking classes on the #cheflyapp.

"I can't wait until the day that diners can open their doors to personal chefs once again, I have so many future bookings - demand is crazy! Chefly will allow me to manage all of my bookings in one place and to reach an even wider net of customers so I am looking forward to the future!"
